GN ISRAEL 29 08 08

Quote for the Week
"I think the population is losing half of its brain power by not =
encouraging women to go into science"=20
(Prof Ada Yonath [See item below] It seems as if Israel is beginning to =
get this right) =09

Our scientists and researchers have been having a field day this week, =
sounds a bit odd but what they=92ve been achieving is anything but. Here =
are but a few examples:

*	Eight people in the world were recognized by Oxford University for =
outstanding contributions to their field, this included Prof. Ada Yonath =
who was awarded her honorary doctorate at this year's Encaenia ceremony. =
Now we would have to devote a complete GN simply to list the awards that =
have been bestowed on Prof Yonath and while we would never think of =
divulging a lady=92s age we would have to add that she is a grandmother =
and a glamorous one at that. Suffice it to say that we have reported on =
her winning UNESCO=92s illustrious =91Life=92s Work Prize for Women in =
Science=92 for her work in developing new antibiotics against strains of =
resistant superbugs. [This item supplied by Peter Mishcon, a reader from =
London]

*	The Wolfson Medical Center, one of Israel=92s largest hospitals has =
just appointed Dr Yael Haviv-Yedid as head of its emergency medicine =
unit. Dr Haviv-Yedid, a specialist in internal medicine brings a wealth =
of experience to her new post. And yet another lady breaks the science =
glass ceiling. We=92re getting there [see Quote for the Week above].=20

*	Ben Gurion University of the Negev and the National Institute for =
Biotechnology in the Negev announced today that they will cooperate with =
BioAbroad, an Israeli non-profit organization dedicated to helping =
biotechnology scientists return to Israel. As part of the cooperation =
with BioAbroad, the university will advertise senior positions on the =
organization's website. In addition, university researchers currently =
based overseas or on sabbatical will accompany BioAbroad's regional =
managers in meetings with scientists working overseas=20

*	Being acclaimed as one of the world=92s top 35 young scientists, =
chosen out of a list of 300 finalists is no mean feat, but this is =
exactly what happened to Hossam Halck of The Technion. GN reported on Dr =
Halck=92s =93mechanical nose=92 consisting of nanosensors that can =
detect the presence of cancer by =91smelling=92 a patient=92s breath. A =
panel of top scientists and the editorial team from MIT=92S Technology =
Review Magazine did the choosing.=20

*	Famous for being the world=92s largest manufacturer of generic drugs =
as well as for its proprietary drug, Copaxone for the treatment of =
Multiple Sclerosis, Teva Pharmaceuticals has announced that they have =
added another ethical medication to their stable. The Azilect tablet =
produced by the Company is the first to slow the progression of =
Parkinson=92s disease. In advanced trials, patients who took Azilect at =
an early stage showed =91significant improvement=92. One more weapon =
added to the armory in man=92s fight against these frightful, =
incapacitating diseases and Israeli scientists are right in the =
forefront of the battle=20

*	The trend is ever downwards and that means things are continuing to =
look up! Unemployment fell to a 24-year low in the second quarter of =
2008, says that perennial bearer of glad tidings, The Central Bureau of =
Statistics. The last time only 5.9% of the civilian workforce was out of =
a job was in 1984. In the first quarter, unemployment had been running =
at 6.1% (and at 7.6% in Q2 of =9208) the Bureau says, but about 9,000 =
people found work, reducing the number of jobless to 174,300. Now =
how=92s that for really GN?!=20

*	Israel's first solar power station is up and running. Moshe Tenne (No, =
we hadn=92t heard of him either) built the plant on his Negev farm for =
NIS 1.3 million, and he estimates he will sell NIS 220,000 worth of =
electricity a year to the national power grid. The state allows home and =
industrial customers to install solar power panels and Tenne inaugurated =
his 50-kilowatt solar array this week It will provide two-thirds of the =
needs of his central Negev farm, located on the region's Wine Route. The =
Tenne family established its farm three years ago, and makes its living =
from a sophisticated dairy barn with 70 cows producing about 800,000 =
liters of milk a year and not from selling current. Sounds like an =
outstanding idea to us!=20

*	And so to Basketball, with ladies first. The women's national team =
used a 20-point rally that bridged the second and third quarters to run =
away with a 100-80 win over hosts Britain after being down in the first =
half. Israel is now tied in first place with Lithuania and Ukraine at =
the end of the first round of group play The Men's national team =
exploded yesterday against Denmark, downing the Danes 85-53 on the =
second day of a preseason tournament in Tallinn, Estonia. Israel broke =
the game wide open in the first 20 minutes, taking a 50-25 lead into the =
locker room. .=20

*	And it=92s the ladies again, bless them, with Laetitia Beck winning a =
bronze medal this week in the prestigious British Girls' Open Golf =
Championships, which were held in Scotland. Six days of effort and =
concentration in some pretty hostile weather, brought Laetitia , who is =
Israel's leading junior female golfer and local Caesarea Lady Champion, =
to the fore in Junior Girls Golf in the United Kingdom. She was one of =
140 female golfers under the age of 18 from 17 countries competing=20

*	GN for Israel=92s two leading banks. Bank Hapoalim posted a net profit =
of NIS 594 million, 40.7% less than in the corresponding quarter in 2007 =
and Bank Leumi=92s. net profit dropped by 3%. =91Less profit=85profits =
dropped=92. How does that become GN? We=92re sure that many of our =
readers will have their own answer to this question but our response is =
that we compared our banks=92 figures to the performance of the =
financial sector in the US and suddenly our lending houses look like =
absolute stars. In Q2 of this year the banks=92 profits in the US of A =
fell by 82% yes eighty-two percent. See what we mean?=20

*	We=92ve kept you updated on the Tourism Industry as it breaks record =
after record and now comes the news that the local inn-keepers are =
looking for 4500 more members of staff and they=92re going all out to =
find them. When they do that=92ll be another dent in the unemployment =
rate [see item above]=20

*	How would we manage without caviar? Speaking personally, rather well, =
we=92d have to say. But there are those who would differ and for whom =
the ever shrinking supply due to pollution and what have you is as close =
to a crisis as they=92re likely to get. Hebrew U researchers to the =
rescue. These sterling folk have just brought locally reared sturgeon to =
caviar producing maturity in ponds on Kibbutz Dan. The question is: Is =
it kosher? Well the jury is still out on that one, with the researchers =
adamant that the fish fulfils the requirements of fins and scales even =
if you do need a magnifying glass to find them (the scales that is), so =
don=92t break out the champagne- or vodka- quite yet. And on that heady =
note we conclude this weeks GN=20
