Quote for the Week
"Without books the development of civilization would have been =
impossible. They are the engines of change, windows of the world, =
lighthouses erect in the sea of time. They are companions, teachers, =
magicians, bankers of the treasures of the mind. Books are humanity in =
print."   =20

(Barbara Tuchman, the late authoress and historian. A good quotation for =
the people of the book)

Our bosses at Anglo-Saxon Real Estate never interfere with editorial =
content but this week they made an exception. =93Don=92t mention the =
economic crisis,=94 they said. =93Just for this edition, don=92t mention =
it=94 So we won=92t.

Dusty digs in the summer heat have an amazing attraction for Israelis. =
And when they produce finds like the ones below then they grab =
everyone=92s attention

*	An Israeli archaeologist digging on a hilltop south of Jerusalem =
believes a ceramic shard found in the ruins of an ancient town bears the =
oldest Hebrew inscription ever discovered. The five lines of faded =
characters written 3,000 years ago, and the ruins of the fortified =
settlement where they were found, are indications that a powerful =
Israelite kingdom existed at the time of the Old Testament's King David. =
The curved pottery shard, 15 centimeters by 15 centimeters, predates the =
next significant Hebrew inscription by between 100 and 200 years.

=20

*	The "gutter," or water system mentioned in the Bible as the way King =
David's men conquered Jerusalem has been found. Most scholars believed =
that David conquered Jebus, which later became known as the City of =
David, through the water system, and that=92s written for all to read in =
2 Sam. 5:8. The measurements of the unearthed channel are suitable for =
passage by people and it continues north, in the direction of the Temple =
Mount, as well as south, and is all within the ancient city and =
connected to the huge building identified as David's palace built in the =
10th century BCE, it was used to bring water to a large nearby pool. At =
the end of the First Temple period in the sixth century BCE, it was =
transformed for use by Jerusalemites generally.

=20

*	Researchers discovered a copper-production center, mentioned in the =
bible, in southern Jordan that dates to the 10th century BCE, the time =
of King Solomon's reign when the region was known as Edom. Another nice =
confluence between archaeological and scientific data and the Bible.=20

=20

*	And yet another significant find; at a dig in the north of Jerusalem =
archaeologists found a sarcophagus with the inscription =91=85. Ben =
HaCohen Hagadol=92 =96 =85.=92the son of the High Priest. Scholars =
believe that this is the burial place of a family member of a chief =
officiant who served in the Second Temple between 30 and 70 CE, in other =
words just before its destruction.

=20

=B7 The price of gasoline will fall to an 18-month low on =
Saturday night. This represents a reduction of 21% from a peak of NIS =
7.01 per liter in early July, Energy market sources said that the price =
cut for fuel will help reduce inflation, and also result in lower prices =
for electricity and flights. It all sounds like GN to us.

=20

*	The level of unemployment during August stood at 5.9%, the same rate =
as the previous month, according to the latest figures just released by =
the Central Bureau of Statistics. =20

=20

=B7 Israelis are real doers but they are also great talkers. If =
Bank Hapoalim is to be believed and why not, the collective national =
dialing finger is in grave danger of wearing out. According to the Bank, =
Partner Communications will post record results for the third quarter of =
2008. Its =96 the bank=92s that is - recommendation for the mobile =
service provider is Outperform, at low risk. Q3 includes summer vacation =
and holidays, when people spend a lot of time with ears glued to mobile =
phones. The number of minutes per user climbs and so does the bill. And =
just think twenty years ago nobody had even heard of a cellular phone=20

=20

=B7 The state will allocate NIS 20 million annually to promote =
bicycle riding. The cabinet had budgeted NIS 100m over five years to =
encourage bike riding as part of the public's leisure activities, and to =
position Israel as a tourist destination for cyclists. The projects will =
include new bicycle paths throughout the country, including within =
cities, and a new Israel Bicycle Trail - a 1,200 kilometer route from =
north to south. Holland we won=92t be- not flat enough. Belgium? =
Perhaps.

=20

=B7 An Israeli Investment house has decided to make its own =
contribution to a greener and cleaner Israel. Employees who give up =
their cars and arrive by bicycle will receive monthly coupons as an =
incentive. Similar gifts will go to those who carpool with other workers =
- a bonus worth NIS 300 a month and users of public transport will =
receive up to NIS 500 a month. This may be the start of something big.=20

=20

=B7 Despite Yoni Erlich's absence, Andy Ram claimed his second =
title in three weeks on Sunday, teaming-up with Michael Llodra to defeat =
Stephen Huss and Ross Hutchins 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 in the final of the Lyon =
Grand Prix. Ram and Llodra, who were seeded second in Lyon, =
<javascript:void(0)> lifted the title in their first tournament =
together. Ram had also won in Vienna with Max Mirnyi two weeks before. =
This was Ram=92s third title in Lyon having won with Erlich in 2003 and =
2004. =93It's always a pleasure to play here," says he. As they say, =
nothing succeeds like success.=20

=20

*	Biopharmaceuticals Company Omrix has raised its sales forecast for the =
third quarter of 2008. The Tel Hashomer-based firm, which is developing =
passive immunizations (that=92s when there is a high risk of infection =
and insufficient time for the body to develop its own immune response, =
or to reduce the symptoms of ongoing or =
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immunosuppression> immunosuppressive =
infections) and technologies to stem bleeding during surgery, now sees =
$21.3 million sales for the quarter, up 35% from $15.8 million in the =
corresponding period of 2007. For the year it now predicts sales of $70 =
million to $72 million, instead of $68 million to $71 million. In 2007, =
Omrix's sales amounted to $51.9 million.=20

=20

*	Merrill Lynch has fallen in love with the shekel. It's the safest =
asset in the emerging markets sphere, the former investment bank's =
analysts wrote. They also feel that Israel's risk of sliding into =
currency =96 don=92t mention the crisis. We know, we know. - is small. =
Merrill Lynch is so sure of Israel's resilience that it thinks the =
shekel is trading beneath its fair value. Its exchange rate against the =
dollar should be NIS 3.18, calculates the bank, which is 17% below its =
present value.=20

=20

=B7 Genesis IV Fund obtained commitments for its fourth fund by =
canvassing existing and new investors for money. Genesis, one of several =
top Israeli venture capital firms, closed the round with $100m. Pretty =
good considering=85 Oops nearly mentioned the you know what! Genesis now =
manages $618 million in four funds.

=20

=B7 Ticks, Dermacentor variabilis, to mention one by name, tend to =
turn Fido into a gourmet restaurant given half a chance. These little =
free loading nasties are a nuisance and a health hazard to humans too, =
causing Lyme disease, tick fever and a host of other ailments. While =
chemical solutions can control these mini-beasts, they=92re often more =
toxic than the ticks. But wait. All is not lost. Israeli company Mitam =
has developed a chemical-free, environmentally safe anti-tick spray that =
is safe for pets and farm animals. Mitam's biological solution takes =
advantage of the fact that ticks do have natural enemies. One in =
particular is a naturally occurring fungus. It eats the tick, and there =
is no egg laying, end of story. The spray can be applied either to the =
animal's habitat on the farm or at home, as well as on the animal =
directly. A question: why do scientists make a habit of giving a 5mm =
long animal a name that stretches for 60mm?
